This is my first Political post. I was watching PM questions and really had a thought about fashion and politics? And can they really go together. Men adopted the suit in the 18th Century to be taken seriously. You wear a dark coloured suit, you were hard working and serious. So when it came to women, we did the same. However we are now in the 21st Century shouldn't we really lose these old Victorian Ideologies. It's difficult to be taken seriously as a women MP to begin with, shown in how many women are currently in the cabinet, four. So to be feminine and take an interest in fashion is only going to make it harder. Fashion still struggles to be taken seriously; even though it's a 3.3 billion pounds industry. If a guy studies fashion then their sexuality is questioned. I know what you're all thinking, Margaret thatcher had style. Maybe. But was she feminine? No. She also had vocal coaching to low the tone of her voice. I believe this needs to change. Sexism still exists, we as women are still earning less then men. It's hard to fight against the victorian views of fashion and when women MPs refuse to show an interest in fashion; seeing it as fickle. Vogue tried to get Sam' Cam, and USA Vogue tried to get Hilary Clinton to do interviews but on the bases of 'wouldn't be respect or (again) not taken seriously' they refused.
The shadow cabinet holds 12 women. These women, are consistently fighting for their rights. To be seen as equal. But why do they still try to hide their femininity. I have a political voice, but I'm not going to dress in an M&S suit because of it.
My advice is to start taking an interest in what you're wearing. Be feminine. Seek YSL. A white, wide legged YSL trouser suit and killer heels will put men in they place. Don't be scared to be both. Be Fashionable and be Political.
To my gorgeous friend, and future PM Ellie Buck.
